May 2017 – Thirty-year home builder and Texan Dan Wallrath said yes to the plea of a stranger. The stranger: A dad desperately seeking help for his son. The son: A Marine Corps veteran who had sustained severe head injuries from an IED explosion in Iraq. The dad needed help remodeling his home to accommodate his son’s needs. Wallrath was the man for the job.

Wallrath was so moved by the experience that in 2005, he founded Operation Finally Home, a nonprofit group that provides custom-built, mortgage-free homes for wounded U.S. veterans and their widows. OFH is now among the nation’s leading nonprofits providing debt-free homes for military heroes.

“I’m not a psychologist … not a doctor,” Wallrath wrote in his book Building Hope. “But God made me a builder, and I could build a home strong, useful, and proud.”

Building Hope addresses the many issues faced by veterans, especially the wounded; and its inspiring stories of military heroes move others to stretch their own faith and look for ways to serve.
