June 1996 – Recently I went on a three-day Christian heritage tour of Washington, D.C., and colonial Virginia with 26 others.
Ladies and gentlemen, let me say here, without reservation, that these United States of America were founded by Christians whose mission was to spread the good news of Jesus Christ and to form a lasting representative form of government for a free people.
Let me encourage you to read anything by David Barton, Catherine Millard or Peter Marshall, and you will see clearly the hand of Almighty God on the founding of this country.
We hear a lot about Thomas Jefferson being a deist or agnostic, the father of separation of church and state according to the American Civil Liberties Union. Well, for those who buy this view of Jefferson let me suggest walking into the Jefferson Memorial. Inside, in marble, are four separate inscriptions by Jefferson. Three of the four might as well be sermons as they are filled with references to the God of the Holy Bible.
George Washington was the greatest American ever to live. If not for General Washington and his leadership, you might not be reading this today. I’m convinced he is one of the top 10 people who have shaped human history.
The following is Washington’s prayer for America. Let it be our prayer today for this country we love so dearly.
Washington’s prayer for the United States of America
Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large.
And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
