Don Wildmon
AFA/AFR founder
May 2000 – Back in early March, I received a call from the manager of our local NBC affiliate wanting to know if I had seen the new NBC program God, the Devil and Bob. I told him I had not and he invited me out to screen the program. Randall Murphree, AFA Journal editor, and I went out and watched the opening episode.
Of course the program was sick and offensive and anti-Christian. The manager wanted my thoughts. He was caught in a dilemma. We talked about what he should do, had prayer for guidance, and I came back to the office. He later decided not to air the program along with many other stations around the country.
I decided that the program was of exceptionally poor quality and would die a natural death with a little help. So we did not go public with a protest, but wrote our Action Alert readers. Action Alert is AFA’s Internet newsletter. But even before we alerted our Action Alert readers, I was surprised to read a column by Michael Schneider of Daily Variety. The headline read, “Wildmon rails against NBC’s Devil.” The column said the program “had now earned the wrath of Wildmon.” At the end of the article the closing line said that “Execs from AFA…were not available for comment.” Mr. Schneider had fabricated the part about me and AFA.
The incident reminded me of an incident with People Magazine many years ago. They called for a comment about a new program featuring some star known for her sex appeal. I decided not to speak with People because I knew they would distort whatever I had to say. A couple of weeks later I picked up People and read the article. They had placed several comments from me in direct quotes. When I called an editor at People and asked why he included quotes from me when I had refused to even talk with them, his response was that it sounded like something I would say.
Like Pilate, most of the people in Hollywood have no sense of truth. They live in a different world than most of us. They have no concept of God. Their morals and values are what you see in their products.
Having studied Hollywood and the media for the past 23 years I have noticed a decided change in how they treat Christians and people of faith. A decade ago most of these people were anti-Christian bigots with bias, but they didn’t want the public to know of their bigotry and bias. Now they still retain that bigotry and bias, but they don’t care if it is known. Indeed, in order to be politically correct today you must be bigoted toward Christians.
Is the fact that they are now open in their bigotry and bias against Christians a good thing? I think it is. Now any thinking person can easily detect the bigotry and bias and deal with it. The sooner Christians learn this and act on it, the quicker we will be on the road toward a positive change.
