June 2006 – In early June, the U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote on a constitutional amendment to protect marriage. AFA and other pro-family groups are encouraging supporters to contact their senators and ask them to vote for traditional marriage.

The Marriage Protection Amendment, as the measure is titled, states simply: “Marriage in the United States shall consist solely of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.”

The amendment will come before the Senate as S.J. Res. 1, and is being pushed vigorously by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN).

To amend the U.S. Constitution, a measure must pass both houses of Congress by a two-thirds majority, and then be ratified by three-fourths of the states.

“Marriage is a foundational institution in our society, but it is crumbling. We must safeguard its sanctity from the assaults of sexual extremists and activist judges,” said AFA Chairman Don Wildmon. “We are asking our supporters to contact both of their senators and express to them how important it is that the Marriage Protection Amendment be passed.”  undefined
