January 1995 – David Milch, the co-creator and executive producer of ABC’s soft-core porn series NYPD Blue, says he is a racist and puts racism in the program.

Milch told a group of approximately 100 writers that he is a racist and that he puts his racist views into the character of Detective Andy Sipowicz, played by Dennis Franz. He told the writers that Jews make good writers while blacks do not. “I’m racist,” Milch admitted.

ABC says it will continue to air the program despite its use of racism. AFA has asked advertisers not to support NYPD Blue’s racism with their advertising dollars.

AFA says that ABC has been losing approximately $1 million in potential advertising revenue with each episode of the program which airs. “It is clear that ABC not only endorses NYPD Blue’s soft-core pornography, but also racism. The program should be canceled. Advertisers who continue to underwrite the program now are aware that they are sponsoring not only pornography but blatant racism,” said AFA president Donald Wildmon.

Washington Post writer Ellen Edwards said that when reached by phone, “Milch was outraged that his comments had become public.” Milch simply did not want his racist views known outside his Hollywood circle.

“We expect racial minorities and all people who cherish fairness to oppose the program and the advertisers which sponsor it to become increasingly involved,” Wildmon said. “We will not accept the racism nor the anti-Christian bigotry which Hollywood condones.”
