October 2015 – Amnesty International, a human rights organization that has spent decades building a strong reputation standing against modern-day slavery, recently adopted a new policy supporting the global decriminalization of prostitution.

Several organizations that fight trafficking are putting pressure on Amnesty to rescind the policy. National Center on Sexual Exploitation, Coalition Against Trafficking, and celebrities such as Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway argue that legalizing prostitution will only serve to normalize sex trafficking.

Statistics overwhelmingly favor keeping prostitution illegal. In every area and country where it is legal, violence against women drastically increases.

Lisa Thompson spoke on behalf of NCSE to OneNewsNow, AFA’s e-news source. She said, “In most places where you have legal regimes of prostitution, there are panic buttons in the rooms for women to hit in case a buyer gets violent. It alerts security who can rush in to give them assistance. That is a dead giveaway to the violence involved in prostitution.”
