July 2019 – Hundreds of citizens gathered on the steps of the U.S. Capitol to read the Bible in a marathon 90-hour session. The annual reading, launched in 1990, is a four-day event that serves as a prelude to the National Day of Prayer. The reading takes place around the clock, rain or shine. The read-a-thon’s purpose is to be a vivid reminder of the Bible’s role in America’s history and future. Indiana-based Seedline International assumed sponsorship of the DC Bible Marathon this year.
“Because the Bible is at the heart of America’s founding principles,” the DC Bible Marathon website explains, “it should be voiced at the heart of our federal government, exhorting our nation to return to God’s precepts. Therefore, it is our desire to publicly read God’s Holy Word on the steps of the nation’s Capitol, every year, for 90 consecutive hours.”
The observance was capped off with faith leaders such as Dr. Ronnie Floyd and Pastor Andrew Brunson joining lawmakers inside the Capitol to pray.
