July 2019 – A unique account on the social media photo and video sharing platform Instagram is a compelling and groundbreaking project released to commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27, the day the project was launched). Loosely based on the journal of Eva Heyman, it features a dramatization told in a series of Instagram stories.
Heyman was a Jewish teenager in Hungary during the Nazi occupation. She kept a diary of the final months of her life before being sent to Auschwitz with her family, which is where the Instagram series comes to an end. The project has received both criticism and praise, including an endorsement from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Eva’s story can be viewed at instagram.com/eva.stories.
