July 2021 – On April 9, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) signed House Bill 2889 concerning adults who are sentenced for repeated sexual offenses against children. Probation, parole, or work release will no longer be allowed for such offenders.
“You’ve ruined people’s lives,” said Rep. Leo Biasiucci (R), one of the bill’s sponsors. “There should be no getting out early for anything.”
Under the new law, someone convicted of producing or distributing pornography featuring a child age 12 or younger, as well as someone convicted of sex trafficking, could serve life without parole. An exception could be exercised in instances of statutory rape, when an 18- or 19-year-old has sexual relations with someone under the age of consent.
