July 2021 – On May 6, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) signed Senate Bill 90 into law. The law seeks to reduce the chance of fraudulent votes by adding restrictions to voting by mail and ballot harvesting, as well as enhancing voter ID requirements.
Additionally, the law bars local agencies from accepting outside money for most election related expenses. It also provides new provisions for drop boxes, among numerous other safety measures.
Democrats critical of the law likened it to the era of Jim Crow, cited voter suppression, and immediately challenged it in court.
DeSantis said Florida has what he believes to be “the strongest election integrity measures in the country.”
