May 2015 – Each year, 10 million people pass by the Texas Cross, an astonishing 19-story construction on I-40 near Groom, Texas. Every day, about 1,000 travelers stop for a closer look. The cross is surrounded by graphic sculptures that display Scriptures chronicling the life and crucifixion of Jesus.

The stunning display was erected in 1995 by Steve Thomas. “We know the cross has a powerful meaning behind it,” Thomas said. “It represents forgiveness and love.” Thomas finds all sorts of things left at the foot of the cross – from letters telling how it has impacted visitors to whiskey bottles and other symbols of sinful lifestyles. He trusts that the latter indicate someone turning to God for deliverance.

Thomas is the father of Zach Thomas, All-American football star for Texas Tech University in the 1990s and later all-pro middle linebacker for the Miami Dolphins.
