June 2016 – A Facebook study published in 2015 examined how, aside from algorithms that govern how content shows up, users create an “echo chamber” with what they choose to follow or block in their account.
Research found that, “Despite the slightly higher volume of conservatively aligned articles shared … liberals tend to be connected to fewer friends who share conservative content than conservatives, who tend to be linked to more friends who share liberal content.”
“Nearly half (47%) of consistent conservatives and about a third (32%) of consistent liberals say the posts they see are nearly always in line with their own views,” added Amy Mitchell, director of journalism research at Pew Research Center.
