June 2019 – In early March, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) introduced her long-touted Equality Act of 2019. This act would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by adding “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” as protected classes.
In response, the Heritage Foundation published “7 Reasons Why the Equality Act is Anything But.” According to HF author Monica Burke, Pelosi’s proposed act would or could actually defy the purpose of anti-discrimination laws in
seven ways:
1. Penalize Americans who don’t affirm new sexual norms or gender ideology.
2. Compel speech.
3. Shut down charities.
4. Allow more biological males to defeat girls in sports.
5. Be used to coerce medical professionals.
6. Lead to more parents losing custody of their children.
7. Enable sexual assault.
“The original Civil Rights Act was enacted to protect African-Americans from being denied access to material goods and services,” said Burke. But she fears Pelosi’s act will be used as a sword forcing people to adopt distortions of biblical sexuality.
