President affirms Israel’s sovereignty over Golan Heights

June 2019 – President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on March 25, recognizing the sovereignty of Israel over the controversial territory known as the Golan Heights. Israel won the Golan in the defensive 1967 Six-Day War. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood by the president at the White House as he signed the historic document.
“Israel is an inspiration, a trusted ally, and a cherished friend,” stated President Trump. “The United States will always stand by its side.”
Syria and Lebanon quickly voiced disagreement with the proclamation, and two NATO members, Turkey and Canada, announced their refusal to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights.
