March 2020Dr. Robert O. Lopez (photo above) was released from his duties as professor of humanities at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (SWBTS) in December, following a string of meetings with seminary leaders. Lopez claimed attempts were made to silence him from speaking and writing on sexual sin and abuse – including his testimony of being set free from homosexuality. (See AFAJ 9/19.)

Though SWBTS provost Randy Stinson asserted in a public statement that Lopez had made “categorically false” and “defamatory claims,” Lopez later released recordings, transcripts, and emails that verified his claims. On September 13, the same day the American Thinker published Lopez’s essay “To Affirm LGBT Ideology is to Support Abuse” under a pseudonym, Lopez was warned in a recorded conversation he would possibly be fired if he continued to be involved in areas outside his academic work.
