September 2021On a chilly pre-dawn February morning, an off-duty policeman and his father walked and prayed quietly in front of the EMW abortion center in Louisville, Kentucky. The center was not yet open, and the streets were almost deserted.

Nonetheless, the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) suspended the decorated 13-year veteran (with pay). Attorney Matt Heffron of the Thomas More Society defended the officer.

“It was astounding,” Heffron said, “that the police department would treat a hardworking, loyal officer this way.” After four months, the LMPD finally announced it will not pursue any disciplinary charges.

Dr. Ernest Marshall and Ona Marshall, EMW owners, protested in a statement: “It’s time for LMPD to take the public safety risks on the sidewalks seriously, follow the law, and do their job to ensure safety. …”

Ironically, in March, LMPD took no action against on-duty officers who marched in Black Lives Matter protests and LGBTQ parades.
