September 2021 – On May 31, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) declared a disaster for 34 counties due to an increase of illegal immigration at the Texas-Mexico border. Then following his Border Security Summit in early June, Abbott held a press conference to announce plans to build the border wall between his state and Mexico.
As a result of the disaster declaration, Abbott was able to reallocate $250 million of legislatively appropriated funds as a down payment for the border wall construction project. Along with $1.1 billion already budgeted by Texas for border security, the governor also announced a donation page (borderwall.texas.gov) where people can help fund the wall’s construction.
“The Biden Administration has abandoned its responsibilities to secure the border, and Texans are suffering as a result,” said Gov. Abbott.
“Through this comprehensive public safety effort, we will secure the border, slow the influx of unlawful immigrants, and restore order in our border communities.”
