April 2014 – On February 13 before attending the sold-out debate between Ken Ham and evolutionist Bill Nye, aka “The Science Guy,” I was among the 1,000 or so people who took the opportunity to tour the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky.
From dragons to insects, dinosaurs to “Lucy” (evolutionists’ missing link), Ken Ham’s Creation Museum is filled with high-tech educational exhibits. Believing that good science corroborates Scripture, Ham shows that science and the Bible can not only coexist, but compliment one another.
But there’s more than just information at the museum. Learning is presented as a fun and thrilling experience where visitors can ride on some of the best zip lines in the Midwest, experience the awe inspiring Stargazer’s Planetarium and gain a deeper appreciation of God’s creation by spending time in the museum’s themed gardens.
Exhibits to evangelize
While the museum is informative and fun, Ham and his staff are also driven by a deeper motive: to share the love of God for sinners. To that end, Ham created the 70,000 square foot museum aimed specifically at sharing the redemption story of the Bible.
The Walk Through Bible History chronicles the seven Cs of Bible history. Visitors begin in Creation with Adam and Eve, and, of course, dinosaurs. Then they experience Corruption which includes a portrayal of our first parents being deceived by the serpent, eating the forbidden fruit and sacrificing animals in an attempt to cover their sin.
Corruption is followed by Catastrophe that includes a one percent slice of Noah’s Ark built to full scale. Confusion is next as God disperses people from the Tower of Babel. This exhibit explains the different skin colors and languages of human civilizations.
In Christ, Cross and Consummation, visitors are faced with the reality that God created all things including human beings. But because of our rebellion, sin reigns in our world. In His grace, God sent His Son Jesus Christ to rescue and redeem those who come to Him in faith.
Every exhibit, every theater, every interaction with staff at the museum points visitors to the truth of salvation for sinners found in Christ alone.
For Christians, it is a great reminder of the price paid for salvation. For unbelievers it is encouragement to come meet the Creator through His Son, Jesus.
