October 2014 – Christian music artists Michael and Lisa Gungor lost credibility among Bible-believing Christians after rejecting biblical literalism. Michael Gungor announced disbelief in the Creation, the Flood and the existence of Adam and Eve, summing up with the statement, “No reasonable person takes the entire Bible completely literally.” He added, “Gungor is not, and has never been, a fundamentalist band seeking to spread young earth, biblical literalism across the planet.”

In late 2012 Gungor was quoted as saying, “I lost my metaphysic if you will,” implying he had begun questioning religious beliefs. Gungor also explained that the word “gods” used in some songs in the 2013 album I Am Mountain refers to stories “we thought were true … but can no longer believe in.” Their latest project The Liturgists, created in collaboration with Rob Bell, expresses further religious ambiguity and dismisses gender assignments by God. Bell is the popular controversial pastor and author of Love Wins, a book that critics charge undermines orthodox Christian teachings.

Earlier Gungor songs included “Dry Bones” and “Beautiful Things,” which have become familiar worship songs in many churches.
