April 2018 – In late January, a campus LGBT group raised a ruckus and bullied University of Central Oklahoma into reneging on their contract with creationist Ken Ham after he was scheduled to speak on the Edmond campus.

“I find it highly ironic that after being booked to speak in the school’s Constitution Hall, our constitutional right to free speech and the free exercise of religion guaranteed under the First Amendment have been denied,” said Ham.

Founder of the popular Creation Museum and Ark Encounter attractions, Ham said the university was contradicting its own policies of promoting free inquiry and inclusiveness by revoking his invitation to speak.

Fortunately, on February 15, UCO president Don Betz decided to restore Ham’s speaking engagement date for March 5. But Betz did move the event to an earlier timeslot of 3:00 p.m., which Ham sees as an opportunity for reaching even more UCO students.

“I’m thrilled my talk at UCO is back on again,” said Ham. “UCO officials have definitely heard from many concerned state legislators, several local residents, and alumni about the denial of our right to free speech.”
