July 2018 – Loneliness is a common condition among American adults. While on the surface it may not seem to be critical, loneliness can lead to severe depression, anxiety, and other mental health problems. One would think that loneliness would be decreasing among those most involved with technology.
However, a nationwide survey by the health insurer Cigna found that loneliness is widespread in America, and is especially a problem with the younger generation.
Some of the findings from the study shed light on the issue:
▶ Nearly half of Americans report sometimes or always feeling alone (46%). ▶ One in four Americans (27%) rarely or never feels understood by others. ▶ Adults ages 18-22 are the loneliest demographic.
