October 2019Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-MI) vetoed a bill passed on May 14 that would have made second-trimester dilation and evacuation abortions illegal.

The procedure is also known as a “dismemberment abortion” because the abortionist uses forceps to forcefully pull the child apart, limb from limb, before crushing and removing the head. The gruesome procedure has been outlawed in 12 other states.

Right to Life of Michigan launched a citizen petition to add dismemberment abortion to the state’s existing law banning partial-birth abortion (delivering the baby feet first, puncturing the neck, and vacuuming out the contents of the skull while still in the birth canal).

If 345,000 or more signatures are secured by December 23, the new bill with language from the petition will be returned to the legislature for a vote. If passed, it cannot be amended by the legislature or vetoed by the governor.
