December 2020 – A recent poll found nearly one-fifth (18%) of college students believe violence is an acceptable means of shutting down offensive free speech. The survey was conducted by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, Real Clear Education, and College Pulse. It included 20,000 students from 55 colleges.
Students identifying as extremely liberal were twice as likely as extremely conservative students to say that using violence to block a speech or event from happening on campus is “always” or “sometimes” acceptable (13% versus 6%).
In addition, the extreme liberals quadrupled extreme conservatives on whether it is “always” or “sometimes” acceptable to shout down a speaker (60% to 15%).
