January-February 2020 – The California legislature passed SB-24 forcing public universities to offer the abortion pill to its students. The bill states the intent of the legislature is that “public university student health centers make abortion by medication techniques as accessible and cost effective for students as possible.”
The bill’s author Connie Leyva said, “By ensuring abortion care is available on campus, students won’t have to choose between delaying important medical care, traveling long distances, missing class, or work.”
Gov. Gavin Newsoms (D) signed the bill into law October 11, requiring that 34 campuses in California provide the abortion pill by January 23, 2023. However, pro-life forces have stated they will challenge the bill in court.
