January-February 2020 – The Hope Center, a faith-based homeless shelter that forbids males to reside in areas reserved for abused women, has won a federal court case filed by the city of Anchorage, Alaska. The center had faced legal action for refusing to allow a trans-identified man to sleep in an area next to female abuse survivors.
“Downtown Hope Center serves everyone, but women deserve a safe place to stay overnight. No woman – particularly not an abuse survivor – should be forced to sleep or disrobe next to a man,” senior counsel Kate Anderson said. The court’s decision in favor of the Hope Center is permanent.
