July 2020Bill Lapschies of Oregon recently marked his 104th birthday and a full recovery from COVID-19. He and his family celebrated with chocolate cake and pizza. This makes him one of the nation’s oldest known survivors of the coronavirus.

The United Kingdom is celebrating the recovery of Connie Titchen, a 106-year-old British woman who was recently discharged from Birmingham City Hospital after a battle with COVID-19.

Both Lapschies and Titchen were initially thought to have pneumonia but ended up testing positive for the virus. They both fought the illness for weeks, but their determination to survive helped them push through to full recovery.

“It’s part of why he’s lived so long,” said Lapschies’s granddaughter, Jamie Yutzie. “He’s not going to give up.”

“It’s nice to see patients leave our ward after having beaten this virus,” said Kelly Smith, a hospital worker who cared for Titchens.
