July 2020On October 11, 2019, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill that will require the state’s public universities to offer the abortion pill to students beginning in January 2023. The intent of the legislature is that “public university student health centers make abortion … as accessible and cost effective for students as possible.”

Sen. Connie Leyva (D), the bill’s author, said, “By ensuring abortion care is available on campus, students won’t have to choose between delaying important medical care, traveling long distances, missing class, or work.”

The bill is set to be implemented on 34 campuses. However, pro-life advocates have stated they will challenge the bill in court.
