October 2020Lies always chop at the roots of liberty, and America is in grave danger of coming under the ax.

Lies are one of Satan’s most powerful tools. Christians can counteract with truth, prayers – and voting. Both political parties seeking the president’s office claim to want to improve America. Will one party better fit the four-part test in Exodus for choosing leaders?

Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens (Exodus 18:21, ESV).

The crossroads of America’s choices in 2020 are not dissimilar to those experienced by Germany in the years leading up to World War II.

Longing for better times
“The National Socialist German Worker’s Party (NSGW), led by Adolf Hitler, rose to power during a time of economic uncertainty in a nation of people longing for better times,” wrote Andy Andrews in How Do You Kill 11 Million People? Why the Truth Matters More Than You Think.

The devastating answer to Andrews’ question is “Lie to them.”

Complacency among the German populace had been achieved through a sinister use of power and influence, leading eventually to the death of German liberties. The death of a people’s liberties typically leads only to more death. In Germany, 11 million Jews didn’t just die. They were murdered.

In his anti-Jewish campaign, Adolf Eichmann often appeared to the masses in barbwire Jewish ghettos. He used truth (“We will all be terribly crowded on the trains.”) mixed with lies (“But the journey is short.”). He built truth upon truth (“You will work there.”) mixed with lie upon lie (“And your wives will stay home, and your children will go to school.”).

Subsequently, Jewish men were compelled to convince their families to crowd into the cattle cars. When the padlocks secured the boxcars, lies had been bought, and liberties had been surrendered. Then lives were doomed. Eleven million were not liberated from those Nazi concentration camps.

Andrews revealed how much blood was ultimately shed because of those NSGW ideas: Germany (45.1 million), Cambodia (3 million of an 8 million population), Soviet Union (61.9 million), Turkey (2 million Armenians), North Korea (3 million), and more than 1 million each for three additional nations’ political leadership (Mexico, Pakistan, and the Baltic States). And that’s only a partial list.

A socialist philosophy always claims superiority to existing systems, charging them with perceived or manufactured abuses of power. The assumption is that a deceived people will gradually accept their loss of liberties, even though history shows destruction and death are the two hands attached to socialism’s body of lies.

Praying to preserve liberty
Power alone does not corrupt, for God is the ultimate in power and is the truth. Power plus lies corrupts. Power plus greed corrupts. Power plus fear of man corrupts. Power not rooted in the most powerful and living God corrupts. How does a nation in moral freefall, one such as the U.S., turn a populace back to godly values?

Pray. Pray for and elect leaders of moral courage. Pray for leaders who will not abandon God’s moral values. Pray for their souls, and pray that they leave public office if they continue to advocate against God’s will.

Given the nation’s current political context, pray and work for an honest, fair, and fraud-free election.

Countless Christians in other nations would die to vote in their elections, and many have died in countries where they couldn’t vote. Christians who ignore today’s lessons from history may well doom this nation to an ever-growing loss of her liberties.
