October 2020 – Since the death of George Floyd in early May, the city of Portland has experienced nonstop riots and protests. In spite of the alleged peaceful nature of the protests, federal buildings, businesses, and officers have been attacked.
Recently, demonstrators turned their attention to a new target: Bibles. On August 1, Ian Miles Cheong posted to his Twitter account a video that showed rioters holding Black Lives Matter signs and throwing Bibles into a fire while bystanders watched as flames consumed the pages.
“I don’t know what burning the Bible has to do with protesting against police brutality,” wrote Cheong. “Do not be under the illusion that these protests and riots are anything but an attempt to dismantle all of Western civilization and upend centuries of tradition and freedom of religion.”
