September 2020On June 28, the Mississippi House (91-23) and Senate (37-14) passed a bill removing the state flag’s official status. The retired flag included the Confederate battle flag in one corner.

Gov. Tate Reeves (R) signed HB 1796 into law on June 30. A commission is set to design a new flag to replace the Confederate symbol with the words “In God We Trust.” The new design will appear on the November 3 ballot for a vote by Mississippi citizens. If a majority rejects it, the commission will go to work again using the same guidelines.
