April 2021In addition to hardships caused by the worldwide COVID-19 virus, some nations are using the pandemic as a method of persecution and repression against Christians. According to a report by Open Doors USA, 2020 revealed a 60% increase in the number of Christians killed around the world, largely due to Islamic attacks on Nigerian Christians. The report also stated that anti-Christian groups are using COVID-19 to further oppress Christian communities.

“Less known but equally as viral has been the discrimination, isolation, and violence against Christians by using COVID-19 as a leverage, and as justification,” said Open Doors president and CEO David Curry.

“Extremists … are emboldened by governments weakened by COVID-19 restrictions, knowing that they can steal food and medical supplies from already embattled Christian communities around the world.”

In places like Vietnam and Pakistan, authorities have denied aid to families simply because they are Christians. After denying aid, one Vietnam official told a body of believers, “You are Christians, and your God shall take care of your family!”
