April 2021In early January, the FBI conducted Operation Lost Angels in California. The investigation focused on human trafficking and concluded with the recovery of 33 missing children, eight of whom were victims of sexual exploitation. In this operation, the bureau arrested a suspected human trafficker, and investigations are ongoing.

“The FBI considers human trafficking modern-day slavery, and the minors engaged in commercial sex trafficking are considered victims,” said FBI assistant director Kristi K. Johnson.

In a related story, in Florida, on February 2, FBI agents were caught in a fatal shooting. While serving a warrant concerning child exploitation, five agents were shot, and Special Agents Daniel Alfin and Laura Schwartzenberger were killed. The February shooting marked the deadliest day for the agency since 2013.

“Special Agent Alfin and Special Agent Schwartzenberger exemplified heroism today in defense of their country,” said director Christopher Wray. “The FBI will always honor their ultimate sacrifice and will be forever grateful for their bravery.”
