June 2021For the past 24 years, Tom Cornish, a 96-year-old World War II veteran from Minneapolis, Minnesota, has helped others by knitting hats for the Salvation Army. In 2020 alone, during the height of the pandemic, Cornish donated 400 of his knitted creations, and he continues to make at least one hat per day. He has even taught other residents at his Champlin Shores senior living community to knit as well, with one resident contributing 35 additional hats.

“If I sit and look out the window,” said Cornish, “I would get something out of it, but no one else would. When I make hats, or once in a while scarfs, someone is going to get a big benefit out of that.”

Cornish plans to knit baby hats to add to this year’s donations, and he promises to keep on knitting until he takes his last breath.
