March 2021 – Matthew Amatulli, a Florida 16-year-old, is set on repairing as many U.S. flags as he possibly can. The autistic teenager has always been calmed down by the sight of the Stars and Stripes waving in the breeze.
With his grandmother’s help, Matthew began learning to sew U.S. flags, and then to repair tattered flags.
“Instead of presents, he would always just want flags for birthdays,” his mother told a Florida television station. Businesses in the Palm Beach County area support his hobby by contacting him to repair (or replace) torn and tattered flags.
“I use all of my holiday and birthday money to buy flags that I usually hang on local businesses’ poles,” he wrote on his Facebook page. He went on to thank supporters for gifts of new flags, lightly tattered flags for him to repair, and for monetary donations.
“I love the American flag, our veterans, and other kids with autism just like me!” he exclaimed. He says Facebook donations have helped him buy a new sewing machine that improves his production.
