October 2021The 1972 Summer Olympics opened in Munich, Germany, on August 26. Before dawn on September 5, eight Palestinian terrorists raided an Olympic Village apartment, killing an Israeli coach and athlete and taking nine Israeli team members hostage. In exchange for the hostages, the Black September terrorists, a faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization, demanded the release of 232 prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Eventually a barrage of gunfire erupted, resulting in the deaths of the nine hostages, five Palestinian terrorists, and a German policeman. Following a memorial service, the 1972 Games continued in the athletes’ honor and as a means of defying the terrorists.

Those 11 victims and others who have died during Olympic events were officially memorialized during opening ceremonies of the 2021 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
