December 2014 – Over 50% of America’s adult population is single, according to Pew Research. Views on family are also in decline, with only 29% of young adults saying that marriage and children are a priority for society’s best interest.
Twenty-three percent of children live with single moms, only half of whom have ever been married. Three percent live with single dads, and another three percent with grandparents or someone outside the family. Seven percent live with unmarried cohabiting couples. Just 22% of children live in a home with a stay-at-home mother married to a working father. Thirty-four percent of children live in a home where both parents work.
Married adults predominate in 23 states, with singles more likely to reside in the other 27.
