September 2014 – Before we get started here, do me a favor. Go to the Internet and search “Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas” and click on “images.” And leave it up while you read this commentary.
Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) is railing against “white men” on the U.S. Supreme Court. Harry, Senate majority leader and one grumpy old man, is angry that in June, the Court ruled 5-4 in favor of Hobby Lobby in a major case involving religious freedom.
In case you don’t know what the Hobby Lobby decision was about, here it is: the Hobby Lobby company didn’t want to be forced by the Affordable Health Care Act (ObamaCare) to pay for four specific kinds of birth control. ObamaCare mandates 20 different kinds. Specifically, Hobby Lobby objected to the kinds of drugs that induce abortion. The company said it did not object to the 16 other forms of contraception that prevent pregnancy from occurring in the first place.
Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Wood Specialties, both owned by Christian families, took their case all the way up to the Supreme Court. They argued that it violated their religious convictions to pay for abortion-inducing drugs as part of providing health insurance coverage for employees. The Court agreed in a 5-4 decision, and the political left birthed a cow.
Let me stop right here and thank God for this victory at the Supreme Court. This was an extremely important case. Maybe a top 10 case in our country’s history in my view. Many of you reading this prayed for this case, that God would grant us a win, and He did. But the narrowness of the decision demonstrates just how close the secular progressives are to forcing their godless agenda on American Christians.
But just a few days removed from the Supreme Court announcement, Reid and some fellow Democrats said they would introduce legislation that would overturn the Supreme Court’s decision. Not sure how they expected to do that. Here is how Reid articulated it: “The one thing we are going to do during this work period, sooner rather than later, is to ensure that women’s lives are not determined by virtue of five white men. This Hobby Lobby decision is outrageous, and we are going to do something about it.”
“Outrageous,” Harry? This is where the Democratic Party is today? If a private company will not pay for an employee to have an abortion it’s “outrageous” and women’s lives are in danger? Seriously? It’s not like the women who work for Hobby Lobby can’t go buy these drugs on their own. Nor did the Supreme Court outlaw the drugs themselves. But this is not good enough for the rabidly pro-abortion forces in Washington like Reid, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and President Barack Obama.
Still have those Clarence Thomas images in front of you? He is one of the five justices who agreed with Hobby Lobby. Looking at the photos, is there anything about Thomas that might lead you to believe he is white? And this is our Senate majority leader for the United States of America, Reid, who either doesn’t know that Thomas is black or forgot. I’m not sure which is worse.
And what does being “white” or “men” have to do with anything? If all the whites and all the men on the nine-member Supreme Court recused themselves from this case, there would be only one justice left to decide – Sonia Sotomayor, a Hispanic Catholic. And even though she is a self-described “wise Latina woman,” that’s still a lot of pressure on one person.
It’s curious that those who say “white men” cannot judge impartially concerning women, never said a word when one openly homosexual federal judge in California overturned the votes of seven million voters who supported natural marriage in the Golden State.
But what to do about Harry – the man who said Obama would make a good candidate because he was “light-skinned” and had “no Negro dialect unless he wanted to have one.” (Trent Lott had to resign as leader of the Senate for lesser words than that.)
I’m not sure who can reason with Harry right now. He is one angry white dude.
