July-August 2016 – In 2014, when Wyoming’s marriage statute was overturned to allow same sex marriage licenses, Pinedale Municipal Court Judge Ruth Neely (photo above) became the subject of a judicial misconduct investigation because of her biblical beliefs on marriage. Although she had never been asked to perform a gay wedding and no complaints had been issued against her, the Wyoming Commission on Judicial Conduct and Ethics moved ahead to request the Wyoming Supreme Court to remove Neely from office. Over the past two years, Neely has been pressured multiple times to resign or revise her views on marriage, but she has refused.

Alliance Defending Freedom has addressed a petition on her behalf to the Wyoming Supreme Court.

“By adopting this extreme position, the commission has effectively said that no one who holds Judge Neely’s widely shared beliefs about marriage can remain a judge in Wyoming,” the ADF petition states.
