November 2016 – Phyllis Schlafly, conservative champion for women and the family, died September 5 at age 92 after a battle with cancer.

Among her many accomplishments, she led a successful 10-year battle (1972-1982) to defeat the deceptively titled and widely embraced Equal Rights Amendment, longtime top legislative goal of the radical feminists. The STOP ERA movement formed by Schlafly was able to demonstrate the harmful repercussions the ERA would have had on women and the nation as a whole.

While Schlafly was never opposed to women’s equality, she was opposed to the notion that the roles of men and women are the same. Had ERA passed, women would have lost their military exemption, husbands would no longer have been obligated by law to support their wives, and laws specifically protecting women against assault would have been eliminated.

By 1972, Schlafly had already founded the Eagle Forum, and she actively served as president of the conservative pro-family group until her death. (AFA Journal will publish a feature story on Schlafly in an upcoming issue.)
