September 2016 – Maya Dillard Smith, former interim executive director of the ACLU Georgia chapter, resigned from her position after firsthand experience with the uncomfortable reality resulting from President Obama’s transgender bathroom directive.

“[I had] taken my elementary school age daughters into a women’s restroom when shortly after three transgender young adults over six feet [tall] with deep voices entered,” Smith wrote. “My children were visibly frightened, concerned about their safety, and left asking lots of questions for which I, like many parents, was ill-prepared to answer.”

On May 29, she told Atlanta Progressive News that ACLU allowed no room for dialogue and is “a special interest organization that promotes not all, but certain progressive rights.”
