December 2017 – Over a decade ago, Tennessee required able-bodied adults who requested food stamp assistance to work or volunteer 20 hours a week. In 2008, at the height of the economic recession, the state eased that requirement. But the state legislature has decided to reinstate it as a measure to prevent fraud, waste, and abuse of government assistance.
