March 2018 – A recent op-ed for NBC news claimed that, “[S]cience proves kids are bad for Earth … morality suggests we stop having them.”

However, Lyman Stone, an economist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, wrote online at Medium that the U.S. fertility rate is well below the replacement rate necessary to maintain the population.

While two-year-old data puts the fertility rate at 1.84 children per woman, Stone estimated that monthly data from 2016 and 2017 brings the number closer to 1.77.

The result of such statistics would be a declining and aging population, leading to a shrinking labor force, higher taxes and cost of living, economic stagnation, and social deterioration.
