November 2018 – On the last day of August, a group of Kountze (Texas) High School football cheerleaders were told by the Texas Supreme Court that after five years of litigation they could continue to use Bible verses on their pre-game run-through banners.

In 2012, their school district had caved in to a complaint from the Freedom From Religion Foundation and banned the Scriptures from both middle school and high school football banners.

At every level of litigation since then, the cheerleaders won – district court, appellate court, and now Texas Supreme Court. Therefore, Hiram Sasser, the cheerleaders’ general counsel at First Liberty Institute, believes this victory could have far reaching impact and inspire other students and parents to stand up for their rights.

Sasser stated, “As the football season kicks off across Texas, it’s good to be reminded that these cheerleaders have a right to have religious speech on their run-through banners.”
