November 2018 – In June, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its much anticipated decision in Janus v. American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees with a 5-4 vote in favor of workers’ free speech rights. Prior to this landmark decision, labor unions could legally force government workers to pay union fees and subsidize collective bargaining.

Represented by Jacob Huebert of Liberty Justice Center, Mark Janus, an Illinois state social worker, filed suit in 2015 against AFSCME because he did not agree with its political positions and felt that being forced to financially support the union’s work violated his First Amendment rights.
