September 2019 – Despite Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential victory, the same election cycle brought New York Democrats a political prize of grand proportions – control of both houses of the state legislature.
After more than 50 years of near continuous Republican control in the state senate, Democrats won both houses and immediately launched a liberal overhaul of state government.
In less than two years, the leftist majority has logged a list of progressive “accomplishments” that include new gun control laws; criminal justice and campaign finance reforms; new rights for voters, immigrants, and victims of violence; and bans on plastic bags, toxic toys, and offshore drilling.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) dubbed it “the most successful legislative session in modern political history.”
