September 2019 – According to David Curry, president of Open Doors USA, American Christians care more about the TV series Game of Thrones than about persecuted believers around the world. In an op-ed for USA Today, Curry called out the American church for “whistling through the graveyard” of those persecuted saints.

Curry cited several areas where persecution is strong, such as the Middle East, where the “ideology of hatred and violence against Christians” continues to rise. Curry also named India, where he said violence against Christians has spiked 400% since 2014.

“American churches must do better,” Curry wrote, arguing that when persecution occurs elsewhere in the world, “instead of in our backyard, it is often dismissed as just another story.” Curry hopes the church will increase its knowledge of global persecution, pray for its victims, and advocate on their behalf.
