May 2020On February 19, President Donald Trump announced the formation of a new board to investigate the use of body parts from aborted babies in scientific research. Specifically, this board will target taxpayer-funded research using body parts.

Called the Human Fetal Tissue Research Ethics Advisory Board, this group will consist of 15 non-government individuals, including doctors, ethicists, and theologians. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary Alex Azar is supervising creation of the board.

After investigating, the group will then submit a report to HHS recommending further action concerning such research. In 2018 a $20 million grant was established by HHS to invest in alternative research that does not use baby parts. HHS assistant secretary for health Brett Giroir wrote in 2018 that the Trump administration is “fully committed to prioritizing, expanding, and accelerating efforts to develop and implement the use of these alternatives.”
