May 2021In October, prior to the 2020 presidential election, a number of evangelical leaders joined together to form Pro-life Evangelicals for Biden.

The group claimed to “mourn abortion” and insisted they “are committed to work to reduce the number of abortions.” However, they justified support of Biden by stating, “Joe Biden’s policies are more consistent with the biblically shaped ethic of life than those of Donald Trump.” They urged other evangelicals to support Biden as well.

However, in light of the Biden administration’s recent support for a COVID-19 relief bill that would repeal the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funding of most abortions, the group said they feel used and betrayed. The group believes they “took risks to support Biden publicly” and said these actions “raise the question of whether or not we are still welcome in the Democratic Party.”

Tony Perkins, president of Family Research Council, said the group “can’t say they weren’t warned.”

“Everyone in America knew where Joe Biden stood on abortion,” Perkins added, “because he told them in 13 debates, multiple campaign ads, and a Planned Parenthood town hall. If Evangelicals for Biden want to say they never saw this COVID bill and its abortion funding coming, then they were the only ones.”
