May 2021University of Chicago students Audrey Unverferth and Evita Duffy are fighting against groupthink and “cancel culture” by founding the Chicago Thinker, a digital newspaper operated by students with perspectives that run counter to mainstream liberalism. The paper’s motto is “Outthink the mob.” Its mission statement is “Embracing the experience of unfettered inquiry and free expression is precisely the point of these years of intense study.”

The majority of politically active students on campus do not support the views expressed in the online publication.

“[T]hat’s exactly why we founded the Chicago Thinker,” said Unverferth, “to challenge that and show that conservative and libertarian principles deserve to be defended, we deserve
a voice.”

Though some respond to the paper’s content with hate mail, Duffy said they also receive “beautiful messages … from students and professors … who are so happy that we are doing this and giving them the courage to stand up.”
