May 2014 – A municipal bond offering has raised enough money to begin construction of Ken Ham’s Ark Encounter at Answers in Genesis ministry in Kentucky. Ham said the high-profile debate between Bill Nye and himself helped boost support for the project.  He also said the bond issue faced many obstacles, including what he considered misleading news media reports and attempts by opponents to disrupt the bond offering.

But regardless of opposition, the Ark Encounter will break ground in May.

After hearing the news, Bill Nye said he felt “heartbroken and sickened for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.” He said the ark would eventually draw more attention to the beliefs of Ham’s ministry, which preaches that the creation story in Genesis is true, therefore, “voters and taxpayers in Kentucky will eventually see that this is not in their best interest.”
